Foot Neuroma
Benign Soft Tissue Growths Surrounding a Sensory Nerve
They occur between the third and fourth metatarsal heads most frequently as well as between the second and third metatarsal heads. The nerves are traumatized by the compression of the metatarsal heads pinching the nerve.
Pain is typically increased when the patient elevates on the ball of the foot or wears tight shoes. In the early stages, neuromas can be treated successfully with conservative care.
Treatment consists of the following: injections, orthotics, or modification of shoe gear and activity. If the neuroma is too large, conservative treatment will fail. Consequently surgical excision of neuroma is our preferred method for treating this condition.
We have tremendous results with excising a neuroma and allowing the patient to resume normal walking within 4-6 weeks without discomfort.
